Woolworths Christmas Light Packaging

The packaging of Woolworths sets can help identify the year a light set dates from.

Early 1980s version 1989 to 1991 design - red version 1995 - 1997 design - standard version

Date codes

From 1986 onwards, light sets featured a date code on the rear of the box. This was '6', '7', '8' or '9' printed in a circle for the years 1986 to 1989 inclusive. From 1990 onwards, a more obvious two digit year abbreviation in a circle was typically used.

Company name

Older sets carried the in-house 'Winfield' brand. By 1983, this brand had been abandoned and packaging was branded as simply 'Woolworth' instead, later changing to 'Woolworths' from 1987.

Model numbers

Boxes mostly featured a model number starting with a J until 1990. From 1991, model numbers started with an L instead, coinciding with sets being redesigned to meet new safety regulations.

Box colour notes

Pre-1986: Typically red boxes for sets of 20 lights and green boxes for sets of 40. White boxes with two red-coloured corners were used for sets of 20 petal lights in some years instead.

1989-1991: Usually red boxes for sets of 20 lights and green boxes for larger sets or premium designs.

1992-1994: Mostly red boxes with green boxes used for a few premium designs.

1995-1997: A darker two-tone green design for the main range of lights. Cheaper options had a brighter green and red design and 'Supervalue' branding.

1998-1999: Red with gold stars for 'Supervalue' sets, or two-tone gold for premium sets.
